In brief, I envision a school system where every child is elevated, parents are valued, teachers are respected, administrators are organized, and the School Board is responsive. In particular, this involves several key concepts:
Wellness: We desperately need to reduce stress and homework levels, so our students can find meaning and success.
Diversity: Our district must learn to teach racial and cultural literacy to our children as well as our staff.
Equity: We need to continue to work towards leveling the playing field, so that everyone has a shot at success.
Differentiation: We have children with a remarkable array of learning differences, so we must reach every single child and recognize their “multiple intelligences.”
Communication: We need to facilitate a dialogue with busy parents, by implementing surveys and improving websites and newsletters.
Accountability: Administrators and board members must listen to, organize and respond to the needs of students, parents and teachers.
Evidence-Based Analysis: Every decision must be considered with supporting evidence, logic, and current research.
Balance: Our district is large and diverse, so every action must be weighed and assessed against the needs of the entire district with clarity and always with the budget in mind.
What Else Do I Envision?
–A civil School Board that carefully considers every opinion.
–A caring district that routinely seeks parent input.
–An active School Board that is eager to learn from other school districts.
–A strong district which both embraces and teaches sustainable practices.
–An expanded and improved wellness program for our educators.
–Report cards that more accurately reflect student’s strengths and weakness.
–Safer and more secure schools.
